SEYCHELLES TRAVEL GUIDE
Seychelles Travel Costs & Money: Budget, Rupees and Payments

Build a Seychelles budget from actual trip choices
Seychelles travel costs depend heavily on accommodation, the number of island changes and how often you choose organised outings. A self-catering stay near shops and a beach is a different purchase from a secluded resort with compulsory transfers and most meals on site. Start with the route and room arrangement rather than a single daily figure that hides these differences. This guide covers short-trip spending and payment planning; Cost of Living looks at the different questions raised by an extended visitor stay.
Keep international flights separate from local costs unless you deliberately include them. Record whether a quote is per person, per room, per vehicle or per boat. Couples sharing a room should not multiply a room rate by two, while a park entry charged to each visitor should not be mistaken for a group price. Mark every estimate as an estimate until you have a dated supplier quote, and retain a contingency that remains accessible if one card or connection fails.

| Cost item | Correct unit to record | Questions before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Room or unit per night | Occupancy, meals, tax, cancellation and transfers? |
| Ferry or flight | Person per direction | Bags, fare restrictions and hotel/jetty transfers? |
| Taxi | Vehicle and agreed journey | Waiting time, stops and late arrival included? |
| Park or reserve | Person and named site/day | Boat, guide or equipment separate? |
| Food | Person or shared meal | Service, drinks and dietary substitutions? |
Seychellois rupees, cards and a practical cash reserve
The local currency is the Seychellois rupee, abbreviated SCR. Australian government guidance notes ATM availability at the international airport and visitor centres, card acceptance at many tourism businesses and more limited access in remote places. Ask smaller accommodation providers about their accepted currency and payment method before arrival. Do not assume a mobile wallet replaces a physical card everywhere.
Take a second usable payment method and keep it separately from your main wallet. Withdraw or exchange enough for immediate transfers and small purchases, then reassess as you move between islands. Keep receipts and check the amount and currency before authorising a terminal payment. If offered a home-currency conversion, compare the displayed rate and charges with your card’s terms. A comfortable cash reserve is different from carrying the entire trip budget around a beach or leaving it visible in a rental vehicle.
Accommodation levy: the important 2026 change
Check the accommodation’s statutory category and whether the quoted total includes the Tourism Environmental Sustainability Levy. From 1 January 2026, the levy no longer applies to small establishments with one to twenty-four rooms. Medium-class accommodation remains charged at SCR75 per liable visitor per night; large establishments, yachts and island resorts at SCR100. Children aged twelve and under and specified other categories are exempt. The Seychelles Revenue Commission update should be read with the current amendment, rather than copying its older small-establishment rate table further down the page.
For an explicit example, two liable adults spending seven nights at a property charged SCR100 would owe SCR1,400 in levy if it is additional to the quoted room total. That is arithmetic for this stated scenario, not a universal hotel supplement. A move to another property may change the category. Ask for the charge as a separate line on the final quote so it is counted once rather than omitted or added twice.
Budget for the full transfer, not just the ticket

A ferry fare does not necessarily include the taxi from the airport to the departure quay, the taxi at the other end or a hotel’s transfer charge. Similarly, a short domestic flight to Praslin lands at the airport, while a ferry uses a different arrival point. Compare transport options from the actual room you leave to the actual room you reach. A slightly higher ticket price can still be the better total purchase if it avoids extra road transfers or an awkward overnight stop.
Look carefully at checked and hand-baggage entitlements, especially if the domestic leg is separately booked from an international flight. Include the cost of a possible flight or ferry change in your decision about restrictive fares. For taxis without a meter, agree the journey price before starting. Avoid assigning a nationwide standard taxi fare to trips of different length or conditions. See Getting Around for modes and Airports & Transfers for arrival logistics.
Use confirmed admission costs without confusing inclusions

Several protected sites publish their own fees. The Parks and Gardens Authority lists Curieuse at SCR300 and several marine parks at SCR200 for the stated nonresident adult category; the fee is separate from reaching the park unless your excursion explicitly includes it. A boat outing that includes lunch, park entry and equipment cannot be compared directly with a transfer-only price. Check child eligibility with the operator or authority when the published age wording is ambiguous.
Meal budgets benefit from the same approach. Decide how many breakfasts are included, how many meals you will cook and whether the nearest alternatives need a taxi. A cheaper remote room can lose its saving if every dinner requires transport. For self-catering, verify the kitchen equipment before buying food for several days. Plan a mix of simple meals and chosen restaurant experiences, keeping drinks and transport visible as separate items. See Food & Drink and Restaurants for the meal decisions behind the numbers.
Exchange, declarations and payment safeguards
Use banks or licensed exchange businesses and compare the rate after commissions, rather than accepting a street approach. The Seychelles Revenue Commission customs guidance requires a declaration when physically carrying SCR50,000 or the foreign-currency equivalent or more into or out of Seychelles. Read the current instructions before travelling with a large amount of cash or monetary instruments. This legal threshold is not a recommended amount to carry.
Keep enough account headroom for a hotel security deposit, delayed refund or emergency replacement booking. A preauthorisation can reduce the available balance even when it is not a final charge. Save invoices and cancellation terms offline, including which supplier actually took payment. If a payment fails, avoid repeated attempts until you know whether the earlier attempt was charged. Contact the merchant and your card issuer through trusted channels, and keep the reference numbers needed to resolve a duplicate or disputed transaction.
A reliable comparison method without invented market averages
Create two versions of your own trip: the route you most want and a version with one fewer hotel change or excursion. Fill both with dated accommodation and transport quotes. Add meals using your real board basis, then add known admissions, communication costs, local transfers and a contingency. Compare the total for the same travellers and the same number of nights. This shows whether the major saving comes from location, room category or a simpler route.
Do not substitute the immigration financial requirement for a spending estimate. Proof of sufficient funds is an entry matter, and prepaid accommodation changes what you may still need to spend without automatically changing what evidence immigration can request. Keep that distinction clear when budgeting and consult Visa & Entry for the documentation. Recheck supplier prices before booking: exchange rates, availability and cancellation conditions make an undated budget quickly misleading.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the small-hotel SCR25 levy still charged?
The official amendment removes the levy for small establishments with one to twenty-four rooms from 1 January 2026. Confirm the property’s statutory category and quote; medium and large categories have different remaining charges.
Should I bring only euros or US dollars?
No single payment method suits every purchase. Keep access to SCR, ask each property about its payment terms, and carry a second card or other practical backup. ATMs and card acceptance are less dependable in remote locations.
Is US$150 per day a recommended holiday budget?
No. That amount appears in Seychelles immigration’s sufficient-funds requirement. It is not a researched estimate of your daily spending and should not replace an actual trip budget.
How can I reduce costs without choosing every cheapest option?
Compare complete room-to-room journeys, stay near useful meals and transport, and consider fewer overnight bases. A clear inclusive price may be better than a low headline price with several necessary additions.
