Travel Tip: Book the first island connection only after you have checked the complete arrival chain. Keep a workable Mahé alternative if a separately ticketed flight or ferry cannot be reached.

Choose your Seychelles arrival route

Seychelles International Airport on Mahé is the main international gateway. Your next journey depends on whether you are staying on Mahé, connecting by air to Praslin, or continuing toward a ferry. Treat those as three different arrival plans. Do not reserve an island hotel before checking that the relevant onward service operates with enough time after your actual flight. A short flight or crossing does not remove immigration, baggage collection and transfer time.

This guide covers the airport-to-first-base decision. For subsequent island journeys, buses and rental cars, use Getting Around. Complete the official requirements explained in Visa & Entry before departure; airport assistance and a prepaid transfer do not replace admission documents. Keep your accommodation address and onward arrangements available offline as well as in your email inbox.

After landing: finish the arrival formalities first

Allow your plan to begin with immigration, baggage reclaim and any customs or biosecurity procedures that apply to your belongings. Do not promise a driver that you will be outside at the scheduled touchdown time. Flight arrival boards and your host's meeting instructions are better coordination tools than an optimistic estimate. If the arriving flight changes, notify the transfer provider through its confirmed contact rather than relying on the hotel to infer the delay.

Separate the documents you need immediately from items you can leave packed. Carry your passport, approved travel documents, accommodation details and essential medication in an accessible bag. Keep the address of the first property in a form that a driver can identify. A booking reference on its own is less useful than the actual property name, district and entrance instructions, particularly where accommodation is on a steep or unmarked approach.

Taxis and private transfers on Mahé

The airport's official transportation page confirms taxis outside arrivals and car-rental services at the airport. For a taxi, establish the destination and full quoted charge before setting off, including luggage and any agreed stops. For a prepaid transfer, check the meeting point, flight-delay procedure and whether the vehicle is appropriate for the size of your party and bags.

Compare convenience as well as price. A direct hotel transfer can be a useful first-day choice after an overnight flight, particularly with children or an arrival after dark. A vehicle booked for four people may not fit four large cases unless that has been confirmed. If you need a child restraint or room for a folded mobility aid, ask specifically and receive a clear answer instead of assuming a standard vehicle carries it.

Collecting a rental car at the airport

Airport collection can save a later vehicle delivery, but inspect the arrangement before choosing it. Confirm the desk or representative, rental paperwork, deposit method, insurance excess, fuel policy and return location. Photograph existing damage with the company present, then take time to understand the controls before leaving the parking area. A very early arrival is not a reason to drive while exhausted or hurry into unfamiliar roads.

If your first night is a simple arrival stop and the next morning begins with a ferry, a full airport rental may add unnecessary logistics. Compare a direct transfer with the complete cost of collection, parking and return. For a longer Mahé stay with several coastal outings, the same car may be more useful. The right decision follows your route rather than a blanket assumption that every Seychelles visitor needs a car immediately.

The airport bus: useful only when your luggage and route fit

Public transport is available outside the airport, but a bus is not equivalent to an airport shuttle with dedicated suitcase space. Check SPTC's visitor-card information and the current timetable before choosing it. Confirm directly with the operator whether your exact bags will be accepted; do not assume a local bus offers dedicated airport-luggage space. Travelling light is a materially different proposition from arriving with several holiday cases and a tired family.

Use a bus when you know the correct stop, payment arrangement and final route to your property, with enough daylight and energy for any walk. If the accommodation is up a steep driveway or far from a suitable stop, the last part can outweigh the saving. Do not make a tight ferry connection depend on an unfamiliar bus transfer. Arrange an appropriate vehicle when luggage, mobility requirements or an inflexible onward departure makes that necessary.

Connecting from Mahé to Praslin by air

Air Seychelles operates domestic flights between Mahé and Praslin. Its domestic service information describes the nearby terminals and a short flight to Praslin. The useful question is your complete connection, not the minutes in the air. Establish whether the international and domestic sectors are on a protected through booking or separate tickets, and follow the airline's instructions for baggage and rechecking.

Check the allowance written on your own ticket. Small-aircraft cabin space and baggage handling differ from a long-haul flight; keep documents, medication and immediate essentials with you. Allowances can depend on ticket type and through travel. Do not assume that a generous international cabin-bag entitlement applies unchanged to a domestic aircraft. If carrying specialist equipment, send its dimensions and weight to the airline before the day of travel.

On Praslin, book the pickup from Iles des Palmes Airport, not from the ferry jetty. The airport authority identifies it as a domestic gateway on the Grand Anse side. Tell your accommodation the flight number, and make sure its transfer offer is for the arrival you actually selected. A flight and a ferry on the same island can require very different road journeys.

From the airport to a ferry

Mahé's ferry departure is a separate road journey from the airport. When arranging it, provide the booked sailing and ask where you should meet the transfer service after arrivals. Include the time required to collect bags and complete the ferry's own check-in. A transfer company can estimate road travel; it cannot guarantee the arrival formalities or a delayed international aircraft. Avoid treating two independently sold services as one protected connection.

Consult Cat Cocos's official schedule and your ticket confirmation for the actual sailing. A late arrival may mean staying on Mahé rather than continuing immediately. For La Digue, verify whether the chosen itinerary is direct or involves a connection and what happens to your baggage. Keep the first accommodation informed if the final sea leg becomes impossible; arrival instructions are more useful when discussed before an evening disruption.

Assistance and practical airport facilities

If you need airport assistance, inform your airline in advance. The airport customer centre lists facilities for passengers with reduced mobility and explains that advance notice allows ground handling arrangements. Ask about the full route, including domestic boarding and the vehicle to your property. Accessible terminal facilities do not establish that a small aircraft, ferry boarding point or hotel approach meets your individual requirements.

The official services page lists money exchange, banking, telecommunications and luggage storage. Use the current operating information rather than assuming every desk opens for every flight. If storing bags, confirm opening hours, acceptance conditions and retrieval time before leaving them. A short stop is easier when you first decide which tasks are essential now and which can wait until you have reached your accommodation.

Build the return journey before the final day

Work backward from your international airline's check-in requirement, then add the domestic or ferry journey and each road transfer. A same-day return from another island has several points of failure, particularly when the sea connection is separately ticketed. A final Mahé night can simplify the departure for travellers with early flights or inflexible tickets. It is an itinerary choice that buys time, rather than a guarantee against all disruption.

Confirm pickup the day before, settle any hotel departure details and have the return terminal written clearly. If the domestic flight or ferry changes, contact the provider promptly and preserve the message or revised confirmation. Allow time to retrieve a stored suitcase or return a vehicle; those tasks happen before international check-in, not after it. Keep the final morning focused on leaving, rather than adding one last distant beach visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which airport receives international flights to Seychelles?

Seychelles International Airport on Mahé is the main international gateway. Praslin has a separate domestic airport, so a Praslin stay normally adds another flight or a ferry and road transfer.

Can I walk between the international and domestic terminals?

Air Seychelles describes them as a short walk apart. Follow the airline’s connection instructions; immigration, bags and check-in still need time even though the terminals are close.

Is the ferry terminal at the airport?

No. Include a road transfer to Mahé’s ferry terminal and the ferry’s own check-in time. Confirm the sailing and transfer as separate services unless your booking explicitly states otherwise.

Can I take an airport bus with a large suitcase?

Confirm your exact luggage with SPTC before planning around the bus. Do not assume it offers dedicated airport-luggage space; arrange a suitable vehicle when carriage has not been confirmed.

How do I arrange assistance?

Tell your airline in advance and describe the help you require. Check domestic boarding, onward transport and your accommodation separately rather than assuming one airport request covers the whole holiday.
