Budapest has no separate city visa. Your entry requirements depend on Hungary’s rules, your nationality, travel document, purpose and length of stay, and your wider Schengen itinerary. Use the Hungarian consular service responsible for your place of residence and the EU’s official information before you book a non-refundable trip.

Start with your passport and purpose

Check whether you need a short-stay Schengen visa or can visit visa-free, and confirm the document-validity and supporting-evidence requirements for your circumstances. A residence permit or visa issued by another country can affect the answer, but it should not be treated as an automatic exemption without checking the applicable rule.

For a visitor subject to the usual Schengen short-stay limit, time spent in other Schengen countries counts toward the shared 90 days in any 180-day period. The clock does not restart when you cross from Austria or Slovakia into Hungary. Use official guidance or the official calculator for a complicated itinerary.

If you need a visa

Apply through the authority responsible for your main Schengen destination under the official consular rules. Having a flight into Budapest does not always make Hungary the correct application country if your main stay is elsewhere. Confirm appointment availability, processing requirements and the documents for your travel purpose well before departure.

A visa or hotel booking does not remove the border authority’s entry checks. Carry the evidence required for your trip, such as accommodation and onward-travel arrangements, in a form you can retrieve offline. Do not rely on a reseller’s summary for an eligibility decision.

EES and ETIAS are different systems

The EU states that the Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It records relevant short-stay non-EU travellers at external Schengen borders; it is not a separate application to buy in advance. Follow the border staff’s procedure and allow additional time where registration is required.

At the 16 October 2026 check, the European Commission’s Smart Borders page states that ETIAS is not yet in operation and is not collecting applications. Recheck the official EU status close to travel: do not pay an intermediary claiming to sell a currently required ETIAS on the strength of an old or speculative article. When the system starts, the official rules and implementation arrangements will determine what is required.

Where the border check happens

An arrival from outside Schengen can involve the external-border process at Budapest Airport. If you enter Schengen elsewhere before flying or travelling to Budapest, that first external crossing is relevant. Internal travel does not cancel the need to carry valid documents or meet the applicable conditions.

Keep a realistic buffer before a prebooked transfer or timed attraction. Baggage delivery and border procedures can make a fixed sightseeing appointment soon after landing a poor choice. Use Airports & Transfers once the entry question is settled.

Long stays and remote work

A furnished apartment, monthly transport pass or tourist budget does not grant permission to stay or work. Study, employment, remote work and stays beyond short-visit conditions may require a different route. Check the Hungarian immigration authority and the responsible consulate for your specific purpose.

The longer-stay budget covers accommodation and daily arrangements only. Keep immigration eligibility separate from the practical question of whether an apartment has a kitchen or internet.

Travel Tip: Check entry rules before committing to non-refundable bookings, then recheck close to departure. Save the official pages and your documents so you can retrieve them without airport Wi-Fi.
