Getting Around Pisa: Walking, Buses, Trains & Cars

Walking works well for many central Pisa visits, but the useful transport choice depends on the distance, heat, luggage and your access needs. Keep the airport transfer, urban buses and regional trains separate: they use different routes and ticket rules.

Walk the centre in connected sections

Pisa Centrale, the river and the cathedral quarter form a north–south axis rather than one small square. The direct walk from the station to the tower is roughly two kilometres depending on the route; allow about 30–40 minutes at an ordinary sightseeing pace before stops, and longer with bags or access needs. These are planning estimates, not a timed accessible route.

Use Corso Italia and Ponte di Mezzo for a walk through the centre, then continue via Borgo Stretto and the university lanes. A bus or taxi for the longest section can preserve energy for the visits themselves. The city map helps you avoid repeated backtracking.

Urban buses and choosing a ticket

JourneyChoose and validate correctly
Urban busAutolinee Toscane’s current Urbano capoluogo fare is €2.00; Pisa validity is 70 minutes. Activate or validate according to the medium before travelling.
Coast or suburban routeChoose the actual origin and destination; mixed urban/suburban routes may need a different fare. Do not assume an ordinary urban ticket covers Tirrenia or Calambrone.
PisamoverA separate airport shuttle product; use its QR gates and validity rules.
Regional trainUse the ticket for the actual route and conditions. Digital and traditional paper tickets have different validation arrangements.

The AT fares page reflects the fare changes from August 2026. Use the operator’s planner and notices for the actual stop and route. Route names and diversions change; a historic LAM colour is not sufficient journey information.

Buy before boarding where possible. Paper tickets need validation; app tickets need activation according to the app instructions. With contactless payment, follow the operator’s instructions for the same card or device, and do not assume one tap buys tickets for your whole group.

Pisa Centrale versus Pisa San Rossore

Pisa Centrale is the main interchange for Pisamover and many regional and longer-distance journeys. Pisa San Rossore can be useful near the monumental quarter when your particular service stops there; it is not a substitute for checking the train’s actual calling pattern.

For Lucca or Florence, check the date-specific journey and the last useful return with Trenitalia. Traditional paper regional tickets require the applicable station validation. Trenitalia’s digital regional ticket validates automatically at the booked departure time under its current rules; keep the actual travel barcode available, not merely a purchase receipt. Check the ticket conditions if you need to change the train.

Cycling and taxis

Cycling can be useful on suitable routes, including a separately planned coast outing, but pedestrian lanes and crowded monument approaches call for restraint. Use marked cycle facilities, follow local signs and dismount where required. Confirm hire terms, locks, lights and the return point before setting off.

Taxis are helpful for a specific cross-city journey, late return or luggage. Use a licensed taxi rank or verified dispatcher; agree the destination and ask how the fare and extras will be calculated. Do not assume the closest visible road reaches a hotel door in the restricted centre.

Driving and rental cars

A central Pisa visit rarely needs a car. The restricted traffic zone (ZTL), authorised access, parking and luggage drop-off should be checked before driving into the historic centre. A hotel booking alone does not grant unlimited permission to cross camera-controlled entrances.

If you need a car for rural Tuscany, consider collecting it as you leave Pisa. Verify the licence requirements, deposit, card policy, insurance excess, fuel rules and pickup desk opening directly with the supplier. A broad car search is not a Pisa Airport pickup reservation. Compare car hire on Booking.com We may earn a commission if you book through our Booking.com link. Select and verify your pickup location and dates on the provider’s site.

Transport accessibility checks

Confirm the exact station platform route and any booked assistance with RFI. For buses, check the operator’s accessibility information and the actual stop and vehicle. Lift availability, kerbs and boarding conditions can change; a network-wide symbol is not a guarantee for one journey.

Use Accessibility to plan the entire chain from accommodation entrance to attraction. Keep the taxi option for a missing connection or a route that proves unsuitable.

Travel Tip: Save the exact return stop and last useful service before leaving for the coast or a suburban visit. A route number alone does not establish the right direction or final destination.

Frequently asked questions

Can I walk from Pisa Centrale to the tower?

Many visitors do, via the centre; the route is roughly two kilometres. Allow about 30–40 minutes before stops and adjust for luggage, heat and your mobility needs.

Does a Pisa urban bus ticket cover the airport shuttle?

No. Pisamover is a separate product. Choose a separate urban or suburban fare for any onward bus journey.

Which Pisa station is closest to the tower?

Pisa San Rossore is closer to the monumental quarter, but only helps when your particular train stops there. Pisa Centrale is the main airport-shuttle interchange.

Should I rent a car for the city?

Usually a car adds parking and ZTL complexity to a central visit. It may be useful for a rural onward route after the city stay.
