Athens Airport, Flights & Transfers

Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), is the main international air gateway for an Athens visit. Choose the onward journey for your actual address and arrival time, not simply for the shortest advertised ride. Baggage collection, border formalities and the final walk all affect when you reach the room.
This guide covers flights and the first transfer. Getting Around covers everyday city travel after arrival.
| Option | A useful reason to choose it | Check before travel |
|---|---|---|
| Metro | A hotel near a useful station and manageable final walk | Airport service, ticket coverage, last departure and station exit. |
| Express bus | A suitable airport route or arrival time | Stop location, luggage handling and the final journey. |
| Taxi / prebooked transfer | A direct journey or specific assistance needs | Official pickup, total fare terms, capacity and accessible vehicle. |
| Airport overnight | An early departure or late arrival | Actual terminal route, room access and check-in arrangements. |
Flying to Athens
Check that the flight uses ATH and read the baggage, connection and arrival-terminal arrangements on the booking. A low fare is not the complete cost if it excludes the bags or flexibility you need. For an onward domestic flight, allow the connection required by the airline and the ticket you actually hold.
A self-transfer between separate tickets gives you different protection from a through booking. Do not assume that the second carrier will rebook you after a delay. Confirm the practical steps with the airlines before choosing a tight connection.

Metro, Rail and Airport Buses
The airport’s public-transport information identifies Metro Line 3 and the airport express buses. Select the service for your destination, then check the current timetable with the operator. Not every city metro journey runs to the airport.
Airport travel has separate ticket conditions. A normal urban ticket should not be assumed to cover the airport section. See the airport products in OASA’s fare information and the practical ticket comparison in Getting Around.
For a suburban-rail journey, verify the actual train and any change rather than treating it as interchangeable with the metro. Use the airport’s current connection information to choose the correct service.
A Direct Transfer or Taxi
Use the airport’s official pickup process and confirm the fare arrangement before setting off. A prebooked transfer needs a clear meeting point, flight-delay policy and contact method. Specify the number of passengers, bags, child-seat needs and mobility equipment.
A standard car is not a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Confirm the required vehicle and assistance directly before paying, and make sure the hotel knows where you can be dropped off. A central pedestrian address can still leave a final luggage journey.

Late Arrivals and Port Connections
Plan against a realistic terminal-exit time rather than scheduled touchdown. Check the last convenient connection and keep a suitable fallback. Send the hotel the expected arrival time and understand how late check-in works.
If continuing to Piraeus or another port, identify the exact gate, vessel check-in requirement and connection. A port is not a single pickup point. Do not combine a non-refundable ferry with a flight arrival unless the connection leaves enough margin for the risks you accept.
A Car for an Onward Journey
For a city-focused stay, compare collecting a car when leaving Athens with keeping it through several days of parking. Read driver requirements, deposit, fuel, insurance, collection and return terms for the actual booking. Compare the complete rental cost, collection hours, fuel policy and the arrangements for returning the car before your flight.
