Athens Travel Essentials: Money, Safety & Useful Contacts

A little preparation makes an Athens visit easier: know the complete room total, save the entrance and return route, and keep the official information that matters to your own trip. This guide brings everyday decisions together without turning an old facts or telephone list into a promise about current services.
For national entry rules and the airport journey, use Visa & Entry and Airports & Transfers.
Travel Costs & Money
Athens uses the euro (€). Build the budget around your dates and the same set of inclusions: room, meals, transport, paid visits and a margin for changes. A hotel quote may show taxes, breakfast or optional services separately. Compare the complete total before deciding that one room is cheaper.
Use real quotes for accommodation and the specific visits you want. Do not treat a broad online daily-budget figure as a live market price. For a group, separate shared room or taxi costs from costs charged to each person.
For card payments and cash, check your own bank’s charges and exchange terms. Review the amount and currency presented before confirming a payment or withdrawal. Carry a workable fallback rather than depending on a single phone, card or cash source.
| Budget item | How to compare it |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | Same dates, guests, room category, taxes and cancellation terms. |
| Meals | The complete meal and drinks for the group. |
| Transport | Every leg, including airport and final connection. |
| Attractions / experiences | Admission, guide, transport and optional extras separately. |
| Contingency | A realistic allowance for a changed route or delayed arrival. |
Daily Preparation
Save the accommodation address, check-in instructions and a contact method before arriving. Keep the important reservation information available when the phone has no connection. Ask your mobile provider about roaming or choose a suitable local service with clear terms.
Check device and charger compatibility with Greece before packing. Carry the medication and documentation you personally require under the relevant official rules; obtain medical or prescription advice from a qualified professional. A general travel checklist cannot determine what treatment is right for you.
Opening hours vary by institution, season and holiday. Check the actual venue for the day you intend to visit instead of applying a general city-wide rule.
Safety & Useful Contacts
Use ordinary awareness in busy stations, markets and crowded sightseeing areas, and keep valuables secure. No city or district label is a guarantee of safety. Check current local notices and your government’s travel advice for issues that affect your own plans.
For an emergency needing immediate assistance in Greece, call 112. The Civil Protection service explains when and how to use it. Its general instructions also identify 166 for EKAB emergency medical care, 100 for police and 199 for fire services. Keep the location and nature of the emergency clear. These are emergency services, not tourist-information lines.
For lost documents or consular assistance, use your own government’s official embassy directory and the relevant mission’s current contact instructions. Do not rely on an undated list of addresses or visa-office hours. For transport disruption, use the operator; for hotel access or check-in, contact the property directly.
Follow official heat, wildfire, severe-weather and site-closure instructions. Adjust an outdoor plan when conditions require it. The Accessibility guide addresses route and facility checks rather than medical advice.
City Passes & Tickets
Separate three things: an OASA transport product, a ticket for a particular museum or archaeological site, and a commercial sightseeing package. The word “pass” does not establish that all three are included.
Getting Around compares the current published transport products. For a museum, read that institution’s own admission and reservation rules. The Acropolis Museum visitor information is separate from the archaeological site’s entry arrangements.
Before buying a package, list the visits you will actually make, add the equivalent standalone cost, and read the validity period, reservation requirements and exclusions. Do not pay for theoretical savings on places you do not intend to visit. Check who supplies the ticket and where customer support comes from.

Longer Stays
For a week or several weeks, compare the full accommodation arrangement: kitchen, laundry, cleaning, desk, internet conditions, utilities, deposits and cancellation terms. A low nightly figure can hide differences that matter over a longer stay.
Choose a neighbourhood for the journeys and services you will use repeatedly. Where to Stay helps compare areas. Check current transport-product conditions before assuming that a visitor can use every long-term card in the same way.
Athens has coworking options listed by the official city guide. Verify the actual opening, desk product and booking directly. A café with Wi-Fi is not automatically suitable for a full working day.
Residence, work permission and tax questions depend on nationality and circumstances. Use the relevant official authorities and qualified advice; a hotel or apartment booking does not establish a right to live or work in Greece.
