Visa & Entry for Athens: Greece Arrival Planning

Athens follows Greece’s entry rules; the city has no separate visitor visa system. The requirements depend on your nationality, travel document, purpose and itinerary. Begin with official Greece and European Union information rather than an old city facts page.
This page helps organise the checks and the arrival. It does not determine eligibility for an individual traveller or replace a decision by the competent authority.
Start with Your Nationality and Purpose
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa page links to country requirements and Greek missions. Use the mission responsible for your situation to confirm the correct application route and documents.
For a short Schengen visit, the EU explains the common 90-days-in-any-180-days framework and passport conditions for relevant non-EU visitors. Read the official Your Europe guidance for the current scope and exceptions. Do not count only the nights in Athens if the itinerary includes other Schengen countries.
| Your situation | Check with the official authority |
|---|---|
| Short visitor stay | Nationality, passport, visa need and the full Schengen itinerary. |
| Airport transit | Nationality, route, terminal/baggage process and whether you cross the external border. |
| Study, work or longer residence | The correct national permission, not simply a tourist booking. |
| Children or special travel documents | Individual documents and any additional authorisation required. |

Passport and Supporting Documents
For relevant non-EU short-stay travellers, Your Europe specifies a passport issued within the previous ten years and valid for at least three months after intended departure from the EU, subject to the applicable rules. Verify how these requirements apply to your document and itinerary with the official source.
Border officials may request supporting information such as accommodation and return or onward travel. Keep the documents required for your circumstances accessible. Children need their own applicable travel documents; check any additional consent requirements with the competent authority.
An airline check and a border decision are separate processes. Read the carrier’s requirements too, especially when travelling on separate tickets or using a document with special conditions.
EES and ETIAS Are Different Checks
The EU’s border-entry procedures and travel-authorisation system are different from a visa and from one another. Use the official EES and ETIAS pages to check the current procedure and whether a requirement applies on your travel date.
Avoid paying an unofficial intermediary solely because a site claims that every Athens visitor needs a new permit. Confirm the official system, eligibility, start arrangements and fee before taking any application step.

Prepare the Athens Arrival
Allow time for the border and baggage process before a fixed onward connection. The terminal-exit time can differ substantially from scheduled landing. For a separate ferry or flight ticket, understand what happens if the first journey is delayed.
Save your accommodation entrance, contact and check-in instructions. Airports & Transfers covers the journey from ATH; Getting Around covers subsequent city travel. A port connection needs the exact gate and operator’s boarding margin.
When the Trip Changes
A longer stay, a new purpose or extra time elsewhere in Schengen can change the questions you need to ask. Contact the competent authority rather than extending a plan on the assumption that an accommodation booking changes immigration permission.
For everyday longer-stay arrangements, use Longer Stays. Keep legal residence and work questions with official authorities and qualified advisers.
