Best Places to Visit in Mexico: How to Choose
Most lists of the best places in Mexico put Cancún next to Oaxaca as if you could swap one for the other. You cannot. They are different holidays, and the right choice depends far more on what you want to do all day than on which town has the prettiest square.
The short answer: go to Mexico City for museums and food, Oaxaca for markets and craft, the Yucatán for ruins and cenotes, the Caribbean coast for easy beaches, San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato for colonial streets, and Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta for a Pacific resort stay.

Cities and Culture
Mexico City is the place we would send most first-time visitors. You can do a world-class museum in the morning, eat at a street stall for lunch and take a boat through Xochimilco's canals the next day. Teotihuacán is an easy day trip, about 40 km to the north-east.
Oaxaca City is smaller and slower, and it has the strongest food culture in the country. Monte Albán sits on a hill just 9 km west of town, and a day trip to Hierve el Agua pairs well with it.
Mérida is the most liveable base in the Yucatán, and it is well placed for Uxmal, 62 km to the south. San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato are the classic colonial pair. San Miguel is more polished and more expensive, while Guanajuato is a student city with more edge, best seen on foot or on a night walk with the estudiantina.

Beach Destinations
If the beach is the point, the Caribbean coast is the simplest answer: Cancún has the most flights, Playa del Carmen is easiest on foot, and Tulum adds ruins and cenotes. Cancún's Hotel Zone has the classic turquoise view, while a day trip to Isla Mujeres shows a quieter side of the coast.
On the Pacific, Puerto Vallarta feels like a town with a beach attached, and Los Cabos is a more expensive resort strip where the desert drops into the sea. A boat to the arch at Land's End is the obvious first outing. See our guide to Mexico's beaches for how the coasts compare.

Further Afield
The Copper Canyon railway across the Sierra Tarahumara is among the great rail trips in the Americas, but check current safety advice first: the UK and Canada treat Chihuahua state differently. San Cristóbal de las Casas and Palenque make a rewarding pair in Chiapas, with a similar caveat about the road between them. Our safety guide explains both.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most beautiful place in Mexico?
It depends on your taste, but Oaxaca's valleys, the turquoise coast of Isla Mujeres and the Baja desert meeting the sea at Cabo are all strong candidates.
Where should I go in Mexico for the first time?
Mexico City plus Oaxaca for culture and food, or the Yucatán Peninsula for ruins, cenotes and beaches.
What is the prettiest town in Mexico?
San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato are the usual favourites. San Miguel is tidier, and Guanajuato has more character.
Is Cancún or Tulum better?
Cancún is better for big resorts, flights and convenience. Tulum is better for ruins and cenotes, but prices are high and transport is limited.
