Mexico Itineraries: Routes for 7, 10 and 14 Days
A good Mexico itinerary is mostly a list of places you have decided not to visit. Distances are bigger than they look, and every change of base costs most of a day.
The short answer: with one week, stay in one region. With ten days, pair Mexico City with Oaxaca. With two weeks, add the Yucatán by air and finish on the coast.

7 Days in the Yucatán
| Day | Base | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Valladolid | Arrive at Cancún, travel inland and settle in |
| 2 | Valladolid | Early start at Chichén Itzá, then a cenote in the afternoon |
| 3 | Mérida | Move west and spend the evening in the centre |
| 4 | Mérida | Uxmal and cenotes, 62 km south of the city |
| 5 | Tulum or Playa del Carmen | Long travel day back to the coast |
| 6 | Tulum or Playa del Carmen | Tulum ruins and cenotes in the morning |

If you would rather not hire a car, a day tour to Chichén Itzá from Cancún covers the main site in one go, though you will see it at the busiest time of day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7 days enough for Mexico?
Yes, if you stay in one region. A week suits the Yucatán or Mexico City and its surroundings.
Is 2 weeks enough for Mexico?
Two weeks is enough for two or three regions. Trying for more usually means too many travel days.
Do I need a car in Mexico?
Not for cities or most tourist routes. A car is useful in the Yucatán, and only on toll roads and in daylight.
What is the best route for a first trip?
Mexico City, then Oaxaca, then finish on the Yucatán or Caribbean coast.
