Dubai Visa and Entry: Check the Right UAE Travel Permission

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, so the entry decision concerns UAE permission and the circumstances of your journey. Nationality, passport type, residence status and travel purpose can all matter. Do not rely on a universal “Dubai visa” claim or assume that a friend travelling on a different passport has the same entitlement.
Use the official UAE eligibility information and the relevant immigration authority, then confirm document checks with your operating airline. This guide explains the questions to resolve; it does not make an individual eligibility decision or guarantee entry.
Establish the correct route before booking
The UAE government distinguishes travellers who do not need a prior visa, those eligible for visa on arrival and those who must arrange permission in advance. Check the current rule for your exact passport and circumstances. If eligibility depends on a residence permit or another country’s visa, verify the acceptable document, validity and any other conditions with the competent authority.
For Dubai-issued applications, use GDRFA’s actual service information or an authorised application channel. ICP is another federal source of UAE permit information. Avoid a reseller that presents itself as the government, and check the full product, fee, terms and contact route before submitting identity documents or payment.
Check passport and supporting documents
Official tourist-permit guidance commonly requires at least six months’ passport validity; verify the exact requirement for the route that applies to you rather than treating that as a complete universal checklist. Confirm whether your travel document type is accepted, particularly if it differs from a standard ordinary passport.
Keep the actual approval or qualifying document, confirmed accommodation, return/onward itinerary and any other required supporting material accessible. Match the spelling and passport number across the booking and application. If a passport is replaced after an approval is issued, ask the relevant authority how the change should be handled. Do not assume an approval attached to one document automatically transfers to another.
Separate entry validity from permitted stay
On small screens, swipe or scroll this table horizontally. Keyboard users can focus the table area and use the arrow keys.
| Item | What it means for planning | Common mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Permission to enter | The route and conditions under which you may seek entry | Assuming every passport has visa-on-arrival eligibility |
| Entry validity | The period in which an issued approval can be used | Treating this as the allowed number of days inside the UAE |
| Permitted stay | The duration and conditions applying after entry | Counting from a travel article instead of the actual permission |
| Number of entries | Whether exit and return are covered by that product | Assuming a side trip preserves a single-entry permission |
Use the dates and conditions on your own permission and the authority’s current explanation. Do not wait until the last day of an intended stay to investigate an extension or change of status. An application, accommodation booking or payment receipt should not be treated as an automatically granted extension.
Distinguish airside transit from entering the country
A connection that remains within the permitted airside transit arrangement differs from a stopover where you pass immigration to visit the city. Check the airline itinerary, terminal arrangements and baggage handling. If bags must be collected landside, if you have separate bookings or if the connection changes airports, entry eligibility becomes a real part of the plan.
DXB and DWC are separate airports. Moving between them requires a landside journey and enough time for immigration, collecting baggage, transport and the next check-in deadline. Do not buy a tight self-transfer on the assumption that the words “Dubai connection” guarantee an airside process. The airport transfer guide explains the practical differences.
Keep tourism, longer stays and work distinct
A longer accommodation booking does not itself create the right to stay longer or work. Before committing to an extended visit, confirm how the immigration permission covers the whole period and whether the planned activities are permitted. Do not assume that repeated exits and returns will reset an entitlement.
GDRFA lists a separate virtual-work residence route for people working remotely for an organisation outside the UAE, with its own conditions and documents. Local employment, remote-work residence and leisure travel are different questions. Use the authority’s current route rather than a generic statement that any visitor can work online. The longer-stay guide covers accommodation and daily-life choices without replacing immigration advice.
Recheck before travel and keep the official reference
Check the operating airline’s document instructions before departure and again after a material itinerary or rule change. Keep the official source, application reference and relevant support details together. If information conflicts, seek clarification from the competent authority and airline before relying on an assumption at check-in.
Entry permission does not replace customs or medicine checks. Review what you are carrying and follow the relevant authority’s current requirements. For controlled medicines, the health and safety guide links to the Emirates Drug Establishment service.
Travel Tip
Write down the passport, travel purpose, entry route, last permissible stay date and number of entries that apply to your own trip. Keep the authority’s reference beside that note rather than a copied nationality list.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does everyone need to apply for a Dubai tourist visa?
No. The route depends on the traveller’s nationality and circumstances. Check the current official UAE information for your passport and verify the airline’s document requirements.
Does a hotel booking extend my permitted stay?
No. Accommodation and immigration permission are separate. Any extension or new status must follow the competent authority’s actual process.
Do I need entry eligibility to change between DXB and DWC?
The airport change is a landside journey. Check the permission needed to pass immigration, collect baggage and reach the next airport.
Can I work remotely using ordinary tourist permission?
Do not assume so. Check the relevant authority for your activities and circumstances; GDRFA lists a distinct virtual-work residence route.
