Getting Around Dubai: Metro, nol, Taxis and Local Travel

Dubai is easier to explore when you group nearby places and choose transport for the whole journey. A Metro line on the map does not mean every attraction entrance is a short, shaded walk from a station. Mix rail with a sensible last-mile connection, and avoid spending the day repeatedly crossing the city.

Start with the map and neighbourhood guide to understand the main clusters. If you are travelling from DXB or DWC with luggage, the airport transfer guide deals with the terminal-specific arrival decision.

Choose transport by the complete route

On small screens, swipe or scroll this table horizontally. Keyboard users can focus the table area and use the arrow keys.

Which transport suits your Dubai journey?
ModeUseful whenCheck first
MetroThe starting point and destination connect well to stationsDirection, interchange, service hours and the final entrance walk
Tram or busA local connection makes the wider network practicalExact stop, direction, waiting time and validation rules
Taxi or booked vehicleThe last mile, luggage or group needs favour direct travelOfficial provider, capacity, child seat or access needs and price basis
Abra or other marine serviceThe operating route serves the crossing you actually needPier, fare product, boarding suitability and final departure
WalkingConnected local streets form a comfortable routeCrossings, heat, shade, surface and distance between real entrances

A short vehicle journey can be the more practical choice for one exposed transfer, while rail works well for the longer part of a day. Choose a sequence that leaves time at the places you came to see.

Understand nol before the first journey

RTA uses nol products across its transport network. The Silver card is a common visitor option; RTA listed its purchase price at AED25 including AED19 balance when checked on 2 November 2026. Keep the card and fare balance distinct when planning spending, and check which product matches your journeys. Fare-paying travellers should use their own applicable ticket or card rather than share one. RTA separately states that children under five do not need a nol card for Metro, tram and bus travel; check the current child and concession conditions before choosing products for a family.

The published Silver fares are AED3 within one zone, AED5 across two adjacent zones and AED7.50 across more than two zones. A minimum AED7.50 card balance is required for Metro use according to RTA’s service guidance. Special and intercity services may have different fares. A sightseeing attraction pass should not be treated as a nol card or assumed to include ordinary urban transport.

Plan rail and bus connections carefully

Check the RTA planner for the service, direction and date you need. Read destination signs before boarding and allow time at interchanges. Tap in and out as required, keeping the card ready until the journey is complete. If transferring between eligible modes, RTA’s linked-journey rules include a 30-minute transfer window; the final fare depends on the overall journey and zones.

Use the correct cabin for your ticket, and respect designated seating and carriage arrangements. General operating hours are not a guarantee that every direction has a usable last connection. For an evening reservation, save the return route while you still have time to change the plan. Confirm special timetables around public holidays, major events or service changes.

Use taxis for a purposeful last mile

Choose an authorised taxi arrangement or a clearly identified booking through an established service. Enter the correct hotel or venue entrance and check the pickup position, especially inside large mall, resort and waterfront developments. For a quoted private transfer, confirm the total and any separate waiting, toll or parking charges; a taxi journey in traffic should not be represented by an invented fixed fare.

Book an appropriate child restraint or accessible vehicle in advance when needed. A standard car may not fit several large suitcases or a wheelchair, even if it has enough passenger seats. Keep the booking or receipt if you need to follow up a lost item or dispute. For accessibility questions, use the accessibility guide and confirm actual vehicle details.

Treat walking and water crossings as real journeys

For a Creek crossing, identify the correct pier and actual marine route. A traditional abra, air-conditioned abra, ferry and private sightseeing cruise are different services, with different boarding arrangements and fare rules. Check the product rather than assuming every boat uses the same fare or accepts the same payment.

On foot, use designated crossings and connected pavements. Large roads and developments can turn a short straight-line distance into a longer route. Plan exposed walking for suitable conditions, bring water and allow rest stops. Do not step into a roadway or restricted waterside area to improve a photograph or shorten the route.

Decide whether a rental car solves a real need

A car may help with selected outlying visits, but it adds parking, toll, traffic and insurance decisions to an urban trip. Confirm the licence accepted for your own nationality and status with the rental provider and relevant authority. Read the excess, deposit, fuel policy, mileage, parking and toll administration charges before comparing the total.

For a straightforward city stay, first test a rail-and-taxi itinerary against the places you want to visit. For a day trip, compare the full return plan with a licensed guided or private-transfer option. Do not take a standard rental vehicle into dunes or assume ordinary cover permits off-road driving.

Travel Tip

Save the route from the destination’s actual entrance back to the hotel before you leave. A screenshot of the Metro map alone will not show the last-mile walk, last connection or correct pickup point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a hotel near a Metro station automatically convenient?

Check the real entrance-to-entrance route, crossings and shade. A short distance on a map can still involve an uncomfortable exposed walk or a large development.

Does a nol card cover every journey at the same fare?

No. Urban zone fares, intercity services and marine products need their own checks. The card’s acceptance and the service’s fare are separate questions.

Should I rent a car for a first visit?

Start with your itinerary. If most visits connect well by rail and taxi, a car may add costs and logistics without improving the trip. Outlying journeys need a separate comparison.

Can I rely on a fixed taxi price from a travel article?

Use the official fare basis or the provider’s written quote for the actual journey. Traffic, pickup arrangements and extra charges can affect the total.
