Travel Tip: Keep your accommodation entrance pin, Arabic address and transfer contact in an offline note before the flight.

Cairo International or Sphinx: check the airport code first

Cairo has two different arrival decisions. Cairo International Airport (CAI) is on the eastern side of Greater Cairo; Sphinx International Airport (SPX) serves the western side. Check the code on the actual ticket before comparing transfers. A hotel described simply as “Cairo” may be in Downtown, Zamalek, Heliopolis, New Cairo or the Giza pyramid area, with very different journeys from each airport.

This page covers the journey to your Cairo accommodation. Use the Egypt airports guide when comparing gateways for a wider Nile or Red Sea trip. For immigration eligibility and transit permission, check Egypt Visa & Entry before booking; leaving an airport is an entry decision even on a sightseeing layover.

Arriving at CAI: plan the last metres as well as the drive

Save your hotel’s full address and map pin offline, ideally with an Arabic version provided by the property. Include the entrance rather than only the district name. Give a booked driver the flight number, arrival terminal and a working contact number; ask whether the meeting happens inside arrivals or after you exit. Border formalities, baggage delivery and road traffic make a universal airport-to-hotel time misleading.

If using an app, follow its current terminal-specific instructions and compare the vehicle details before entering. Do not pay an unsolicited intermediary merely to find your car. For a quoted transfer, establish whether parking, waiting after a delay and the entire party’s bags are included. An inexpensive per-person headline may exceed a whole-car quote for a family.

The Metro is useful in the city, but it is not a terminal train

The Line 3 operator’s current station information lists the route and interchanges, without a Cairo Airport passenger-terminal station. A journey using the Metro therefore needs a separate road leg. Do not follow a map that labels a proposed airport extension as an operating direct train.

After settling in, use the city network where it fits your actual destination. Airport arrival with cases and a tired child is a different problem from a light-bag Downtown outing. Before committing to a bus-and-Metro arrival, verify today’s bus, the connecting station, last onward train and the walking surface to your accommodation.

SPX: arrange a west-side arrival deliberately

For SPX, confirm the transfer directly with your accommodation or operator before landing. Current public-bus details, fixed taxi tariffs and universal shared-shuttle timetables are not established here. A west-side airport does not guarantee a short trip to every Giza hotel, and it can be inconvenient for an eastern address.

For an international connection involving CAI and SPX, treat the journey as an airport change requiring a road transfer and any necessary entry permission. Ask the airline whether the connection is protected, where bags must be collected and what happens if the first flight is delayed. A cheap separate ticket needs enough flexibility for this process.

Late arrivals, accessible vehicles and the return flight

Book the specific vehicle features you need: a step-free or assisted entry arrangement, wheelchair storage or securement, an appropriate child restraint and space for all luggage. “Large car” is not an access specification. Ask who will assist at the meeting point and hotel entrance.

For departure, confirm the operating airport and terminal again, then obtain a pickup recommendation for your district and flight from your provider. Keep the airline’s check-in deadline separate from the road journey. Save booking confirmations and an alternative contact offline; do not place a tightly timed Giza visit between arrival and a short onward connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cairo Airport have a direct Metro terminal station?

The current Line 3 station list does not include a CAI passenger-terminal station. Any Metro-based arrival needs a separate road connection; verify that connection before relying on it.

Are CAI and SPX the same airport?

No. Cairo International and Sphinx are separate airports on different sides of Greater Cairo. Check the code on your booking and give it to your driver.

Can I use a short layover to see Giza?

Only after checking entry permission, baggage arrangements, traffic and the airline’s return deadline. A short connection does not provide a reliable sightseeing window.

What should a pre-booked transfer confirmation include?

Airport, terminal, flight number, meeting point, vehicle and luggage capacity, total price, delay allowance and a working contact. Specify child seats or access requirements explicitly.
