Choose a Greece itinerary by the number of nights you can spend in each place, then check the transport connecting those places. Athens, a Cycladic island and Crete can all belong on one holiday, but every move uses time for packing, reaching a terminal, waiting and finding the next accommodation. A short flight or ferry crossing is only part of a transfer day. The routes below are editorial planning suggestions, with flexible activities rather than guaranteed timetables. Book your actual connections before committing to rooms that cannot be cancelled.

Travel Tip: Before an independently booked international flight through Athens, keep a practical gateway buffer rather than relying on the final island departure.

Before choosing a route

Count arrival and departure days separately from complete sightseeing days. A seven day holiday often gives you only five full days, especially after a long haul flight. Decide which experience matters most: classical Athens, island swimming, Cretan food and landscapes, or mainland history. Protect that priority with enough nights in one base. For a first visit, a city and one island can give variety without several ferry dependencies. Travellers who want to avoid sea crossings can build a substantial trip around Athens and the Peloponnese.

Use the existing Map & Regions guide to understand the geography and Getting Around for actual transport decisions. These routes do not assume that every island pair has a direct daily ferry. An itinerary displayed by a ticket seller for one summer date may not work in spring, autumn or the opposite direction. The last night should normally be close to your departure gateway when the preceding connection is independently booked.

Seven days: Athens and Naxos

Day one is for arriving in Athens, checking in and taking a short neighbourhood walk. Choose a central base with straightforward airport access. A relaxed meal and an early night are usually more useful than a prepaid attraction that assumes your flight arrives exactly on schedule. If you arrive early and feel well, explore the pedestrian streets around the Acropolis without committing to a long uphill visit in afternoon heat.

Day two combines the Acropolis with the Acropolis Museum. Reserve the archaeological site's actual timed entry and decide whether you want independent sightseeing or a licensed guide. Keep the museum visit flexible enough to provide an indoor break. Day three can cover the Ancient Agora and a different neighbourhood, followed by practical preparation for the island transfer. Collect or download the ferry documents required by your operator and confirm the departure port and gate.

Day four is the transfer to Naxos, by an available flight or ferry. Spend the afternoon settling into Chora or a suitable beach base. Do not add a distant inland excursion to the same day. Day five is for a beach chosen around the wind and your return transport; Agios Georgios is convenient to town, while other beach areas require their own bus or taxi plan. Day six can explore a village such as Halki, with lunch and a short local walk rather than a rushed circuit of the entire island.

Day seven is the departure day only if your booked connections make this realistic. For an international flight from Athens, a safer version uses day six to return to Athens and sacrifices one island outing. If you have seven nights rather than seven calendar days, keep three nights in Athens, three on Naxos and the final night by your departure gateway. Check the island flight or ferry first; the example is a sequence, not a promise of a particular departure.

Ten days: Athens and western Crete

Spend days one to three in Athens, following the cultural sequence above and leaving room for food, rest and a local neighbourhood walk. Day four moves to Chania on a flight serving your dates. Chania Airport and Heraklion Airport serve different parts of Crete; a cheaper arrival at the opposite end can add a substantial road journey. Compare the full arrival plan rather than choosing only by the airfare.

Days five and six focus on Chania's old town, Venetian harbour and a reachable beach. Keep one day without a car to enjoy the city at a slower pace. Day seven can visit an inland village or a chosen western beach, using a rental car only if it makes the route easier and the contract permits the roads involved. Avoid assuming that all picturesque coves have suitable access for an ordinary hire vehicle.

Day eight is an optional walking day. A Samaria crossing requires suitable fitness, current park opening, transport to the starting point and a return from Agia Roumeli. It should replace a full day's activities, not be added before an evening flight. Use a shorter permitted walk when conditions or fitness make the crossing unsuitable. Day nine provides a weather or rest buffer. Day ten is departure, with a preceding return to Athens if your international ticket requires it. This version deliberately gives Crete several nights rather than attempting both ends of the island in a few days.

Fourteen days: a mainland history route

Begin with three nights in Athens. On day four, collect a car outside the period you need it for city sightseeing, or use the appropriate intercity transport for your chosen bases. Continue to Nafplio and spend three nights there. One complete day can visit Mycenae, another Epidaurus, while the town itself deserves time for its streets and waterfront. Pair each archaeological outing with a relaxed meal rather than treating every day as an endurance drive.

Days seven to nine can move towards the southern Peloponnese. Choose either Monemvasia or a Mani base such as Areopoli according to your interests and onward route. Trying to cover both as daily excursions from a single distant hotel can create more driving than enjoyment. In Monemvasia, check where cars stop and how luggage reaches accommodation inside the historic settlement. In Mani, allow time for winding roads and village access, and confirm parking with your host.

Days ten and eleven can concentrate on another mainland stop that fits your return direction, rather than crossing the country to add an island. Travellers prioritising Olympia should check the actual drive and opening before inserting it. Days twelve and thirteen return towards Athens with time for a final cultural outing or simply a calmer finish. Day fourteen is departure. A public transport version should use fewer bases and confirm each KTEL connection; the road trip sequence is not automatically a workable bus itinerary.

Northern Greece as an alternative

Thessaloniki works as a starting point for travellers whose main interests are food, northern heritage and mountain landscapes. Spend several nights in the city, then choose one inland area. Meteora and Zagori are substantial additions with different access needs; they should not be treated as neighbouring stops just because both appear in a national highlights list. The route can finish back in Thessaloniki when flights permit, avoiding an unnecessary journey to Athens.

For a seven day northern trip, keep a city base and one regional base. For ten or fourteen days, add a second region only after checking the transport between them. A summer beach extension towards Halkidiki has a different rhythm from an autumn walking trip. Check accommodation opening and the actual seasonal service before selecting the extension.

Adapt the itinerary to your party

Families often benefit from fewer hotel changes, laundry access and a beach close to their accommodation. Couples can give a scenic island more nights rather than paying for several short transfers. Travellers with limited mobility should verify the exact hotel approach, ferry assistance and archaeological access before booking. A famous town may have uneven paving, steps or steep streets even when its central area looks compact online.

Keep the plan resilient with one flexible day, especially before an independently booked departure. In July and August, shift exposed sightseeing towards suitable cooler periods and leave indoor alternatives. In winter, concentrate on places with year round services and confirm that the activities you want actually operate. The best itinerary is the one whose essential experiences remain enjoyable when weather, tiredness or a changed connection alters the schedule.
