Singapore Travel Essentials: Entry, Etiquette & Practical Preparation
Prepare for Singapore by separating entry formalities, everyday practicalities and local expectations. A compact destination can still require careful decisions about a passport, medication, accommodation and payment methods. This checklist is designed for international visitors who want to arrive with the essentials organised and avoid spending the first morning solving preventable problems.
Singapore is an independent city-state. English is widely used in visitor settings and is one of four official languages, alongside Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. The currency is the Singapore dollar, the time zone is UTC+8 and local international telephone numbers use country code +65. These basics help with booking times and communication, but they do not replace the specific entry rules that apply to your passport.
Visa and entry: check the passport you will use
Start with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority’s entry requirements. Visa requirements depend on the travel document and circumstances, not on a general statement that most tourists enter easily. A visa, where required, allows travel to seek entry; the immigration decision and the period granted are separate. Do not assume that the validity of a visa is the same as the duration you may remain.
ICA’s general requirements include at least six months’ passport validity for travellers other than Singapore passport holders. Check the exact conditions for your document and journey, including transit or onward travel. Keep accommodation and return or onward journey details available. When entry is granted electronically, read the authorised stay rather than relying on a stamp you expected to receive.
The free SG Arrival Card
The SG Arrival Card is not a visa. It is a separate submission of arrival information and health declaration, normally completed within three days including the day you arrive. Use the official ICA channel or MyICA application and check the exemptions described by ICA. The official service is free; a paid third-party form is not a requirement of entry.
Submit accurate travel details and use an email address you can access during the journey. If your plans change, follow ICA’s process for updating the information. Do not confuse confirmation of a submitted form with permission to enter or a guarantee of a particular visit length. Each member of a travelling party, including children where required, must satisfy the applicable rules.
Transit and a landside visit
Remaining airside for an international connection and entering Singapore are different situations. A visit to Jewel or the city may require passing immigration, even if you return to the airport the same day. If separate tickets require you to collect bags and check in again, investigate those arrangements before booking. An attractive connection length on paper can shrink quickly once queues, terminal travel and airline deadlines are included.
Customs and medication
Check prohibited and controlled goods before packing. Rules in Singapore may differ from those in the country where an item was bought legally. For medicines and devices, use the Health Sciences Authority’s traveller guidance to determine whether an approval or supporting documentation is needed. Check the active ingredients, not only the brand name, and allow enough time for any application.
Keep medication in its original packaging with the prescription or relevant documentation. A doctor’s letter may explain a medical need, but it does not override an import restriction. Do not carry another person’s medicine or an unidentified package as a favour. Ask the relevant authority when the rules are unclear rather than relying on a travel forum’s experience with a different product.
Phone, internet and offline preparation
Compare your home provider’s roaming plan with a local tourist SIM or eSIM. Check that the phone is unlocked, that it supports the product and whether the plan includes calls or only data. A data-only service may be enough for maps and messages but not every ordinary telephone call. Identification can be required when registering a local mobile service.
Download the hotel address, flight details and important booking confirmations before arrival. Keep a second way to access these if the phone fails. Public Wi-Fi is useful, but do not make immigration information or an airport pickup depend on a network you have not yet joined. A charged power bank and the correct cable can be more helpful than several travel applications you have never used.
What to pack for the actual day
Choose light clothing for humid streets, secure walking shoes and a thin layer for cool interiors. Carry rain protection and a small water-resistant pouch for electronics. A refillable bottle is useful where you can replenish it safely. Singapore uses Type G sockets and a nominal 230 V supply; check your device’s voltage range as well as the shape of its plug before connecting it.
Keep the daily bag manageable. A heavy camera kit, shopping bags and an umbrella can turn a short walk into an uncomfortable transfer. If you plan to visit religious sites, bring clothing that covers appropriately and follow the site’s instructions about shoes, head coverings and photography. Requirements vary between places of worship; the same rule should not be assumed everywhere.
Temple, mosque and neighbourhood etiquette
Religious buildings are active community spaces. Avoid blocking entrances, walking through worshippers for a photograph or assuming that every part of a building is open to visitors. Ask before photographing a person, a ceremony or an interior where no clear permission is displayed. A long lens does not remove the need for respect.
In residential heritage streets, remain on public paths and keep doorsteps clear. Do not rearrange items for a photograph or enter a private courtyard because a colourful façade is popular online. At hawker centres, observe queues, check the ordering system and return trays and crockery to the appropriate point. Keep halal and non-halal return arrangements separate where indicated.
Accessibility and specific needs
Plan the step-free journey from the station entrance to the final venue, not simply between station names. Lifts, crossings, covered links and heritage thresholds can affect the route. Ask a hotel for details of the actual accessible room and bathroom rather than accepting a broad statement that the building is accessible. If necessary, request clear information about shower layout, door widths, bed access and the arrival point.
For dietary restrictions, explain the ingredient or preparation issue directly. A dish that appears vegetarian may contain stock, shrimp paste or a fish-based sauce; halal and vegetarian are different requirements. Carry a clear written explanation when the consequence of a misunderstanding is serious, and choose establishments able to answer your questions reliably.
Responsible travel in a compact city
Use public transport where it fits the trip, refill water when practical and avoid disposable items you do not need. Treat public green spaces as habitats as well as visitor attractions: keep to paths, do not feed wildlife and follow temporary closures. At the coast and on offshore islands, take rubbish back to an appropriate collection point and respect weather warnings.
Support the everyday economy by paying fairly for food and services and visiting beyond the most photographed corners. Tourism works better when a neighbourhood remains useful for its residents. Keep noise low near homes, ask before filming workers and buy tickets through the venue or an established seller with clear terms.
Travel tip: Complete the entry checks before choosing optional attraction tickets. A confirmed hotel and an arrival-card submission do not remove the need for the correct passport and visa arrangements.
Singapore travel essentials FAQ
Is the SG Arrival Card a paid visa?
No. The official SG Arrival Card service is free and separate from any visa your travel document may require.
Can I use English for a short visit?
English is widely used in transport, hotels and major visitor settings. Be clear and patient when discussing specific dietary, medical or access needs.
Does a hotel booking prove I may enter?
No. Entry and permitted stay are determined by Singapore’s immigration authorities, independently of the accommodation contract.
