Singapore is straightforward to explore without a rental car, but a good arrival plan still depends on your terminal, luggage and final destination. Changi Airport is the principal international gateway. Its rail connection is useful for many visitors, while a taxi or private-hire car can simplify a late arrival, a family journey or a hotel beyond an easy station walk. Once in the city, use the MRT and buses as the starting point, then choose a car journey where it solves a real problem.

Changi Airport: arrive at the correct terminal

Read your flight’s terminal information before organising a transfer. Changi Airport MRT station serves Terminals 2 and 3 directly; passengers at other terminals need the appropriate airport connection. Jewel is a landside destination, not an attraction you can necessarily visit while remaining in international transit. Allow for immigration and any visa or arrival-card requirements before treating a connection as a sightseeing opportunity.

Keep the hotel name, full address and entrance instructions offline. Large developments may have several entrances with different pickup areas. If you have an accessible-room booking, ask the hotel which arrival point has the most practical step-free approach. The shortest driving route and the most convenient place to unload bags need not be the same.

Train into the city

The airport branch connects through Tanah Merah for the East–West Line and through Expo for the Downtown Line. Choose the interchange that fits your hotel rather than following every passenger to the same platform. A central journey can involve a further interchange and a final walk, so compare the complete route with a car transfer. Airport station access alone does not make rail the best option for every hotel.

Use Changi Airport’s official transport information and the operator’s current journey planner. First and last trains depend on direction, day and connections. A train that leaves one station late at night may not connect with the last train on your next line. Rail engineering work can also change the usual route; avoid making an international check-in depend on the final possible connection.

Taxis and private-hire cars

Follow signs to the taxi queue or the pickup zone specified by your ride-booking app. Airport terminals can have different locations for these services. Ask for the fare basis or review the app’s quoted fare, including applicable surcharges, before departure. Compare a larger vehicle if the party’s bags will not fit safely in a standard car. A cheap headline estimate is of little use if it assumes fewer passengers or less luggage than you have.

Traffic and weather affect journey times. Use a live estimate on the day and add a buffer rather than treating the old guide’s fixed twenty-minute airport claim as a guarantee. For an early flight, a prearranged car or an airport hotel can be more practical than waiting for the first train. For the return journey, confirm the correct departure terminal, airline check-in cutoff and any oversize-baggage arrangements.

Getting around Singapore by MRT and bus

Use rail to connect districts and walking to explore within them. The network is much more useful when you choose a station exit near your actual destination. Interchanges and underground passages can involve a longer walk than a small map suggests. A direct bus can sometimes avoid an awkward rail change, especially for a coastal destination or an east–west trip outside the centre.

For a day in Chinatown, the Civic District and Marina Bay, make one continuous geographic route instead of returning to the hotel after every attraction. On a different day, pair Little India with Bugis and Kampong Gelam. Reserve Mandai or a major Sentosa outing for a dedicated block. Efficient grouping reduces fares, walking in the heat and the temptation to cut short a meal to reach the next booking.

Contactless cards, mobile wallets and stored-value cards

Supported contactless bank cards can be used directly on public transport. SimplyGo’s official card FAQ explains card compatibility and the S$0.60 administrative charge per day of use for foreign-issued Mastercard and Visa cards. Your own bank’s currency conversion or overseas-use charges are separate. Acceptance of a card brand does not guarantee that every individual card will work, so keep an alternative payment method.

Tap in and out with the same physical card or the same device. A phone wallet and its underlying plastic card can be treated as different payment credentials, even when they use the same bank account. Each traveller needs their own accepted payment method; do not assume one card can tap an entire group through the gates. Keep other contactless cards away from the reader to avoid paying with the wrong one.

A stored-value travel card can be useful if your bank card is unsuitable or you prefer a separate transport balance. Compare the purchase cost, available travel value, top-up rules and any refund conditions. A tourist pass is worthwhile only if its eligible journeys and validity period match your itinerary. Neither an unlimited transport product nor an attraction pass automatically includes airport extras, island transport or every private service.

Walking, step-free routes and the last kilometre

Singapore’s central districts invite walking, but humidity, storms and large road junctions can turn a short distance into a tiring transfer. Use sheltered links where they lead in the right direction and take breaks before you become overheated. Carry water and footwear that remains secure on wet pavements. When thunder approaches, stop an exposed waterfront or park walk and use a substantial indoor shelter.

Visitors using a wheelchair or stroller should check station lifts, the correct step-free exit and the entrance at the destination. Heritage buildings can have thresholds even when the surrounding pavement is modern. A taxi may solve one difficult leg without replacing the whole public-transport plan. For a specific mobility requirement, ask the operator or venue for current arrangements rather than assuming a general accessibility symbol covers every route.

Sentosa, Pulau Ubin and cross-border journeys

Sentosa connects through the HarbourFront and VivoCity area, with options including the boardwalk and island transport. Select the arrival point for the attraction you actually want; the island is large enough that a beach, resort and theme-park visit can involve different onward movements. Check the current admission and transport rules rather than assuming a city transport pass covers all services.

Pulau Ubin begins with a separate journey to Changi Point Ferry Terminal near Changi Village, followed by a bumboat crossing. Service depends on conditions and demand; arrange the return with daylight and weather in mind. Malaysia and Indonesia are international journeys, with their own passports, visas, arrival forms and border queues. They are not domestic extensions of the MRT network.

Travel tip: Screenshot the last sensible return connection before an evening out. If you expect to stay beyond it, budget for a car journey at the planning stage.

Singapore transport FAQ

Is there a direct airport train to every central hotel?

No. The airport branch requires an interchange, and many hotels require a further change or a walk. Check the complete route and terminal access.

Can I use a foreign bank card on the MRT?

Supported cards are accepted, subject to card eligibility and SimplyGo rules. Foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards have a daily administrative charge on days used, separate from your bank’s fees.

Should I rent a car for a short visit?

Usually not for central sightseeing. Public transport plus occasional taxis is simpler for many visitors, without parking and driving arrangements.

Can I explore Jewel during an international transit?

Only if your connection, entry eligibility, immigration and baggage arrangements allow a landside visit. Keep the airline’s boarding requirements and return terminal transfer in the calculation.
