SINGAPORE TRAVEL GUIDE
Singapore Travel Costs & Money: Budgeting, Cards & Cash
A Singapore travel budget is easier to control when you separate the price of a room from the cost of eating and moving around. A comfortable hotel and several major attractions can make the trip expensive, while hawker meals, public transport and public waterfront walks can keep daily spending moderate. Decide which experiences deserve your money before comparing a single city-wide daily figure.
All amounts on this page are in Singapore dollars, written S$ or SGD. The example allowances below are editorial planning estimates, not live quotes or a promise that a particular room or meal is available. International flights, shopping, travel insurance and exceptional event pricing are excluded. Check actual accommodation and ticket totals for your dates, then replace the assumptions with the prices you can really book.
Build a daily budget that matches your trip
Start with the room. A couple sharing one room should divide that cost between two people; a solo traveller paying for the same private room cannot. A family may need a larger room, additional beds or two connecting rooms, so multiplying a solo daily allowance by the number of children will not produce a useful total. Read occupancy rules before assuming that a low rate covers everyone.
Next choose a food pattern. A day of simple hawker meals costs differently from hotel breakfast, a café lunch and a restaurant dinner. Add transport for the route you intend to take and tickets for the experiences you actually want. Keep a separate contingency for a wet-weather taxi, an extra drink, a baggage service or a booking change. A budget with no slack can make a short delay feel like a financial emergency.
| Style | Food allowance | Local travel | Attractions allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hawker-led, mostly free sights | S$25–40 | S$8–15 | S$0–25 |
| Mixed cafés and casual restaurants | S$50–90 | S$15–35 | S$25–70 |
| Destination dining and frequent cars | S$100+ | S$40+ | Chosen ticket totals |
Scroll horizontally on smaller screens. These allowances overlap and can be mixed within one trip.
A traveller who walks the bay, visits a free garden and eats at hawker centres may spend little on admissions. A theme park, a wildlife attraction and several observation decks can change the same day’s total substantially. The useful comparison is between your own alternative plans, not between broad claims that Singapore is either cheap or expensive.
Cash, cards and contactless payments
Keep a modest amount of cash for small vendors, older food stalls and any service that cannot accept your payment method. Large hotels, malls and established restaurants generally offer card payment, but acceptance varies by merchant and card. A QR code on a stall does not automatically mean that a visitor’s foreign banking app can pay it. Ask before ordering if you have no cash alternative.
Carry a second card separately from your primary wallet. A declined transaction may result from issuer restrictions rather than a problem with the shop, and a lost phone can remove both your navigation and your preferred wallet. Before travel, check overseas-use settings, withdrawal charges and what your bank requires if a card is blocked. Never share your full card details or verification codes with someone claiming to resolve a routine payment problem.
Currency conversion at checkout
If a terminal or cash machine offers to convert a transaction into your home currency, compare the displayed rate and charges with your bank’s terms. Paying in SGD normally leaves conversion to the card issuer, but the best choice depends on the actual rates and your account. Do not accept a home-currency total merely because it looks familiar. Keep the receipt and review settled transactions rather than treating every pending authorisation as a final charge.
Cash machines and money changers
Use a machine in a well-used bank, mall or airport environment and read its fee notice before confirming a withdrawal. Avoid making many small withdrawals if your bank charges a fixed fee each time. For money changers, compare the final amount received for the same sum and ask whether any commission applies. A rate board is meaningful only when you understand which side of the currency pair you are buying.
Exchange or withdraw enough for practical needs without carrying the entire holiday budget in cash. Keep an emergency reserve apart from your everyday spending money. If you arrive late, having a working card and a small amount of local currency reduces reliance on finding the cheapest exchange counter immediately after a long flight.
Public transport: the small charges that matter
Supported contactless bank cards make rail and bus payment convenient, but the fare is not necessarily the only cost. SimplyGo lists a S$0.60 daily administrative fee for foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards on days they are used. Your bank may add conversion or overseas transaction charges. Across several travel days, include these rather than comparing only one short ride.
Tap in and out using the same card or device. Do not switch from the physical card to the phone wallet halfway through a journey. Compare a stored-value card’s purchase and top-up costs with your expected use before buying one simply to avoid a daily fee. An unlimited tourist product is most useful when your actual eligible journeys would otherwise cost more than the pass.
Room and restaurant totals: read the final price
A displayed menu or room price may be presented differently by different businesses and booking channels. Check whether applicable taxes and service charges are included, especially when a price is marked with plus signs. Compare the final payable total for the same dates, occupancy, breakfast and cancellation terms. A cheaper non-refundable room is not equivalent to a flexible booking if your arrival plans could change.
For restaurants, ask about a minimum spend, cover charge, set-menu requirement or special-event price before taking a table if the conditions are unclear. Drinks can contribute more than expected to a waterfront or rooftop evening. Choose the experience deliberately: one memorable dinner may fit the budget better than buying an expensive drink at every viewpoint.
Attraction tickets and passes
List the exact attractions you want, then record their direct total, eligible dates and expected time needed. Compare a pass only after that exercise. A product that includes ten attractions offers no saving if you can reasonably visit three, or if the places you want require supplements. Check whether reservations are still required, whether entry windows are available and what happens if weather closes an outdoor attraction.
Read the residency category carefully. A price advertised to Singapore residents may not apply to an international visitor. Likewise, a child ticket’s age range can differ between attractions. Avoid adding several non-refundable tickets to the arrival day: a delayed flight can affect all of them at once.
Where to save without losing the trip
Stay near a useful rail station, group activities by district and mix ticketed attractions with public spaces. Choose hawker meals because you want the food, then allow time to enjoy them. Bring refillable water where permitted and avoid repeated taxi trips caused by a scattered itinerary. Savings from a cheaper room far from your daily route can disappear through extra travel and lost time.
Travel tip: Keep accommodation, food, transport and tickets as four separate lines in your plan. If the total is too high, you can then see which change will make a meaningful difference.
Singapore money FAQ
Can I visit Singapore without cash?
Cards cover many major expenses, but some small stalls and services need cash or local payment methods. Carry a modest cash reserve.
Does a transport pass always save money?
No. Compare its price and valid services with the journeys you will actually take, including any card purchase or administrative costs.
Are the example budgets live prices?
No. They are labelled planning allowances. Replace them with actual room, ticket and dining prices for your dates.
