The Lake District
The Lake District, in Cumbria, has England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike (978 metres), and its longest and largest lake, Windermere (17 kilometres). In 2017 it was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its cultural landscape. Base yourself in Windermere, Ambleside or Keswick, and combine a lake cruise with a walk on the fells.
It is easy to reach by train: mainline services stop at Oxenholme, Penrith and Carlisle, and local trains run from Oxenholme to Windermere; there is also a direct train from Manchester to Windermere. The Cumbria travel pass covers trains, Stagecoach buses and Windermere lake cruises.
Bath

The Roman Baths are among the best-preserved Roman remains in northern Europe, built around the city's natural hot spring. Prices vary by date: from 1 November to 18 December 2026, adult tickets cost £23.50 on weekdays and £26.50 at weekends when booked in advance, and are £2 more on the day. Children aged 6–18 pay from £16.50. If you visit in November or December, you can return in January or February for £1. Bath's Georgian Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge are a short walk away.
York

York packs Roman, Viking and medieval history into a compact walled city. Its highlight is York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe. Admission costs £20 for adults, or £26 including the climb up the Central Tower. Walk the city walls and the Shambles, and visit the Jorvik Viking Centre for the city's Viking past.
Manchester and football
Manchester is the home of two of the world's best-known football clubs. Both Manchester United's Old Trafford and Manchester City's Etihad Stadium offer stadium tours with museums; book on the clubs' official websites and check availability around match days. The National Football Museum, in the city centre, covers the history of the game. Away from football, Manchester has excellent music venues, the Science and Industry Museum and lively food halls.
Cheltenham and the Isle of Wight
The Cheltenham Festival, the high point of the British jump-racing season, runs from Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 March 2027 in the Cotswolds. Children aged five and over need a half-price admission ticket; book early for the best prices.
In June, the Isle of Wight Festival, one of the UK's longest-running music festivals, takes place from 17 to 20 June 2027. Ferries cross from Southampton, Lymington and Portsmouth, and the Hovertravel hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde takes about 10 minutes.
