Ski Jumping: Where to Watch It and Where to Try a Taste of It

Ski Jumping

Few skiers will ever jump, but anyone can watch the world's best do it or stand at the top of a real ski jump. Over New Year, the Four Hills Tournament moves across Germany and Austria; in March, Planica in Slovenia hosts the giant ski-flying finals; and in Oslo you can climb the Holmenkollen jump tower all year and even ride a zipline down beside it.

This guide was updated on 5 November 2026 using the official event and venue websites. Check schedules before you book, as competitions can move because of the weather.

The Four Hills Tournament

The Four Hills Tournament (Vierschanzentournee) is ski jumping's most famous event, held over New Year on four hills in Germany and Austria. In 2026–27, it includes both women's and men's competitions:

  • Oberstdorf, Germany: women's competition on 28 December, men's on 29 December 2026.
  • Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany: women's on 31 December 2026; the traditional men's New Year's jump on 1 January 2027.
  • Innsbruck, Austria: women's on 2 January, men's on 3 January 2027, on the Bergisel jump overlooking the city.
  • Bischofshofen, Austria: the final, on 5 and 6 January 2027.

Tickets sell out for the most popular days, especially Garmisch on New Year's Day, so book early through the official websites. Innsbruck makes the best base for a city break with a competition.

Planica ski flying

Ski flying is ski jumping on giant hills, with flights of more than 240 metres. Planica, in Slovenia's Julian Alps, hosts the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup Finals from 18 to 21 March 2027, including a women's ski-flying competition on Saturday 20 March. In 2026, Slovenia's Nika Prevc set a women's record of 242.5 metres there. Tickets went on sale on 7 October 2026; children up to six go free, and on Sunday under-14s go free.

Holmenkollen, Oslo

On the hill above Oslo, Holmenkollen combines the world's oldest ski museum with a tower at the top of the ski jump, giving views over the city and the fjord. Tickets for both cost 200 NOK for adults, 150 NOK for under-30s, 100 NOK for children aged 6–17 and from 500 NOK for families. It is open daily from 10:00 to 16:00 from October to April, and until 17:00 from May to September.

For a taste of the jump, the Kollensvevet zipline runs 361 metres down from the top of the tower, with a height difference of 107.5 metres; it is paid separately at the top and runs in the warmer months (its 2026 season ended on 8 November).

Tips for watching

  • Dress for the cold: you will stand outside for hours; bring thermal layers, warm boots and hand warmers.
  • Arrive early: security queues and shuttle buses can be slow on busy days.
  • Use public transport: parking is limited at most venues, and many events run special shuttles.
  • Follow the weather: wind can delay or cancel rounds, so check the event's website on the day.

Ski jumping: FAQ

When is the Four Hills Tournament 2026–27?

From 28 December 2026 in Oberstdorf to 6 January 2027 in Bischofshofen.

Can I try ski jumping as a tourist?

Not on a competition hill, but you can climb the Holmenkollen jump tower in Oslo and ride the zipline beside it in season.

What is the difference between ski jumping and ski flying?

Ski flying uses much larger hills, so jumps are far longer, often more than 200 metres.
