For a first trip to Scandinavia, combine two capitals with one natural highlight: Copenhagen and Stockholm with a fjord tour from Oslo or Bergen, or Oslo with the far north for the midnight sun or the northern lights. The region is expensive but efficient, safe and easy to travel by train, and most of it is best between late spring and early autumn.

This guide was updated on 5 November 2026 using official museum, attraction and tourism websites. Prices are in local currencies: Danish (DKK), Swedish (SEK) and Norwegian (NOK) kroner.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen is compact, flat and best explored by bike or on foot. Start at the colourful Nyhavn canal, then continue to the royal palace of Amalienborg and the old town. Tivoli Gardens, one of the world's oldest amusement parks, opens in seasons: Christmas in Tivoli runs from 13 November to 3 January, and the 2027 summer season from 30 March to 26 September. Ticket prices vary by date, so check the official calendar.

Stockholm

Stockholm is spread over 14 islands, and the medieval old town, Gamla Stan, is the place to start. The unmissable sight is the Vasa Museum, home to a 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage and was raised almost intact. Adult tickets cost 195 SEK, and visitors aged 0–18 are free; a combined ticket with the Vrak wreck museum costs 315 SEK. It is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, and until 20:00 on Wednesdays. Buying in advance does not let you skip the queue, so arrive early.

Oslo

The cover of this page shows the Oslo Opera House, whose sloping roof was designed as a public space: you can walk up it for views over the fjord. Next door, MUNCH houses the work of Edvard Munch, with adult tickets from 200 NOK (100 NOK under 25, free under 18). On the hill above the city, the Holmenkollen ski jump and museum make an easy half-day trip on the metro; see our guide to ski jumping.

The fjords

Norway's Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the West Norwegian Fjords. The easiest way to see a fjord on a short trip is Norway in a Nutshell, a self-guided tour combining the Bergen Railway, the Flåm Railway and a cruise on the Nærøyfjord. It runs year-round, starts in Oslo or Bergen and costs from 2,698 NOK. Book early for summer.

Midnight sun and northern lights

North of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set in summer. According to Visit Norway, the midnight sun lasts from about 28 May to 14 July in the Lofoten Islands, 20 May to 22 July in Tromsø and 14 May to 29 July at the North Cape.

In winter, the northern lights can be seen in Northern Norway between September and April, when the sky is dark and clear; activity tends to be highest around March, April, September and October. Base yourself in Tromsø or Lofoten, and allow several nights to improve your chances.

Is Scandinavia expensive?

Yes, but free sights such as the Oslo Opera House roof and city parks help, and children often get free museum entry.
