For an Ayurveda or yoga holiday in India, Kerala is the best-known destination for traditional treatments, while Rishikesh in the Himalayan foothills is the classic choice for yoga. Choose an accredited centre, plan for a stay of at least one to two weeks for a meaningful programme, and apply for your e-Tourist visa on the official website at least four days before you travel.

This guide was updated on 5 November 2026 using Kerala Tourism and the Government of India's e-Visa portal. It is travel information, not medical advice: talk to your doctor before starting any treatment programme.

Ayurveda in Kerala

Ayurveda, India's traditional system of medicine, is closely associated with Kerala, where it is still widely practised. Kerala Tourism describes Panchakarma, the best-known cleansing programme, as having three stages: preparation (purvakarma), the main treatment (pradhanakarma) and recovery (paschatkarma). Treatments usually combine herbal oils, massage, diet and rest, so a short visit can only give a taste.

Kerala's mix of beaches, hill stations and the backwaters, shown at the top of this page, makes it easy to combine a treatment stay with sightseeing, for example a houseboat night near Alappuzha (Alleppey).

Choosing a centre

Quality varies widely, from simple spa massages in hotels to residential clinics with doctors. Kerala Tourism publishes a list of accredited Ayurveda centres, classified as Ayur Diamond, Ayur Gold, Ayur Silver, Green Leaf and Olive Leaf. Before booking, check:

  • whether a qualified Ayurveda doctor carries out a consultation before treatment;
  • what is included in the price, such as treatments, meals, yoga and accommodation;
  • how long the programme is, and whether it is tailored to you;
  • recent reviews from independent travellers.

Tell the centre and your own doctor about any medical conditions and medicines, as some treatments and herbal preparations are not suitable for everyone.

Yoga in Rishikesh

Rishikesh, on the Ganges in the foothills of the Himalayas, is one of India's best-known centres for yoga and meditation, with ashrams and schools offering everything from drop-in classes to month-long teacher-training courses. Evening aarti ceremonies on the riverbank are open to visitors. Choose a school by its teachers and course structure rather than by certificates alone, and book ahead in the busy autumn and spring seasons.

India's e-Tourist visa

Many nationalities can apply online for an e-Tourist visa. There are three types: 30 days (multiple entry, non-extendable), one year and five years. With the one-year and five-year visas, you can stay a maximum of 180 days in a calendar year. Apply at least four days before arrival, and only through the official Government of India website; fees depend on your nationality.

When to go

For a beach-and-wellness trip in Kerala, the dry months from about October to March are the most comfortable. The monsoon (roughly June to September) is traditionally considered a good time for Ayurveda treatments, as the cool, humid weather is thought to help, and prices are often lower. Rishikesh is most pleasant from September to November and from February to April.
