A long layover is less tedious in an airport that takes art seriously. San Francisco has an accredited museum spread through its terminals, Singapore's Jewel has the world's tallest indoor waterfall, Doha displays more than 40 permanent artworks, Seattle has around 450, and Amsterdam has a small branch of the Rijksmuseum. Most of this is free and some of it is airside, so you can see it between flights.
This guide was researched on 5 November 2026 using airport and museum websites where they could be reached. Exhibitions rotate and locations change, so check before you fly.

San Francisco: SFO Museum
SFO Museum, run by the airport itself, was accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 1999 and describes itself as the first and only accredited museum in an airport. It runs more than 25 exhibition sites in the terminals, including galleries with changing shows of art, history, science and design. All are free. Aviation fans should look for the Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum in the International Terminal, a recreation of the airport's 1930s passenger waiting room.
Singapore Changi and Jewel

Jewel, the glass-domed complex linked to Changi's terminals, is home to the Rain Vortex, the world's tallest indoor waterfall, which falls 40 metres through the centre of the Forest Valley. It runs daily from 10:00 to 22:00, with light and music shows at 20:00 and 21:00 (and 22:00 from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays). Jewel is landside, so you need time to pass through immigration; Changi's own terminals also have art and garden displays airside.
Note: on 7 and 8 November 2026, the Forest Valley closes in the afternoon and the Rain Vortex is switched off for part of the day.
Doha Hamad International
Hamad International Airport has more than 40 permanent art installations, curated with Qatar Museums. The best-known is Lamp Bear by Urs Fischer, a giant yellow teddy bear in the main duty-free hall. Look out also for Jean-Michel Othoniel's Cosmos, Bill Viola's video work Crossroads and Marc Quinn's Arctic Nurseries of El Dorado. Most works are airside, so they are easy to see during a transfer.
Seattle-Tacoma
The Port of Seattle was the first public agency in the region to set up a public art collection, in the late 1960s. Today Sea-Tac's permanent collection has about 450 works, including pieces by Frank Stella, Louise Nevelson and Robert Rauschenberg, alongside new commissions such as Saya Moriyasu's Kokeshi-no-kai (2026).
Amsterdam Schiphol
The Rijksmuseum has long run a small free gallery at Schiphol, on Holland Boulevard past security, showing a few works from its collection. It has closed for building work in the past, and we could not confirm its status for late 2026, so check Schiphol's website before planning your layover around it.
Layover tips
- Airside or landside? Check whether the art is before or after security. Leaving the secure area means passing security again, and possibly immigration.
- Allow enough time: for a landside visit, such as Jewel, allow at least five or six hours between flights.
- Check your transit rules: some nationalities need a visa to leave the airport, even briefly.
- Use the airport app or map to find exhibitions, as they move between terminals.
