Is Spain Safe?

Most visitors never have any safety issues when they vacation in Spain, but the country is known for its pickpockets, muggers, scam artists, and burglars. There are all sorts of scam artists hanging around tourist areas so it’s best to avoid colorful characters who want to sell you a tie or a scarf. Car break-ins happen frequently so all your valuables should be kept in a hotel safe. The violent crime rate is low, but in some areas of Spain you can be a victim of a slick pickpocket or a roadside police scam. Most people say Spain is safe and for the most part it is when local safety procedures are followed. Spain is safe especially when common sense is your guide.
