Is Portugal safe? When common sense rules, the answer is yes. There are no internal conflicts in Portugal and terrorist have not targeted Portugal. Violent crimes are rare in most areas, but certain neighborhoods in Lisbon and Porto can be high crime areas at night so they should be avoided.

Pickpockets and purse snatchers do target the tourist areas so a hidden money belt or using the hotel safe is always good ideas when you are sightseeing. Buses, shopping streets, and large railroad stations are where most petty crimes occur. Most of the thieves are under the age of eighteen so don't take anyone for granted when you are carrying valuables in public places.
