Safety

Japan has always been known for its low crime rate. Crime has increased over the last few years thanks to a rising foreign population, but the country is still considered a very safe country.

Pickpockets, muggers and common thieves are not a major danger in Japan, but common sense should still be used especially in certain areas of the major cities.

Food and Drink

Generally considered safe but there is a risk of parasitic infection and toxins from raw seafoods.

Health insurance is strongly recommended, owing to the high cost of treatment. The International Association for Medical Assistance to Travellers provides English-speaking doctors. (www.iamat.org)
