In this place, a market was held from XIIth century. Twelve metal houses were built there from 1851 to 1857 by Baltard. Around the Halles, wholesale gathered. But this organization, posed problems of circulations hard to solve. Therefore one moved this market to Rungis in the south of Paris. Old Halles being henceforth replaced by a great shopping centre.
