Amsterdam lost its first harbour place with in aid of Rotterdam, but it remains the centre of the country, its financial and cultural heart. The commercial port connected to the Rhine and the North Sea by deep canals occupies the fifth position in Europe. From its colonial past, it preserved with pride the row of first world port for the cocoa (450 000 tons).
